What is Brain Fry?
Brain Fry is a way to describe decision fatigue that tends to show up in AI-heavy work. It’s also a label that helps you stop treating fatigue as “willpower” — and start breaking it down.
If you’ve felt, “I’m tired, but I can’t explain why,” having a word for it can make things slightly easier.
In English-language discussions, HBR also highlighted a similar pattern under “AI brain fry”: when you keep supervising, verifying, and correcting AI outputs across tools, attention saturates.
Four components
Brain Fry can be roughly broken into four parts:
1. Decision density
How many decisions you’re stacking
2. Context switching
How often you bounce between threads
3. Recovery debt
Whether breaks and sleep are sufficient
4. Signals
Haze, sloppy judgment, can’t-stop feeling
Why it matters
AI work tends to increase decisions — while still feeling like you’re making progress. So load can accumulate quietly.
On good days, it’s even harder to stop. That’s why seeing your state as a rough guide can help.
Brain Fry Checker
Brain Fry Checker visualizes your state as a rough guide.
Purpose
It’s not a diagnosis. It’s a small cue that can help you decide, “Maybe I should stop for today.”
Quick moves (short)
- Start by naming the feeling: “my decisions feel heavy.”
- Pick just one of the four components that fits today.
- If the signal is clear, give yourself permission to stop.
